BBBofC considers new light cruiserweight division to bridge weight gap

The British Boxing Board of Control (BBBofC) is eyeing a new division: men’s light cruiserweight at 185 pounds. The idea addresses a real structural problem in how professional boxing organizes its weight classes.

Right now there’s a 25-pound gap between light heavyweight and cruiserweight—the biggest gap in the entire sport. A light cruiserweight at 185 pounds would fit snugly between the light heavyweight division at 175 pounds and cruiserweight at 200 pounds. That closes the gap and gives fighters a more logical path up the ranks.

Robert W. Smith, the BBBofC’s General Secretary, emailed license holders asking what they thought. The consultation shows the board is serious about exploring this, though it’s waiting to hear what the boxing community has to say before committing.

Other boxing bodies have already tried adding new weight classes. The WBC created bridgerweight in 2020 at 224 pounds, and the WBA picked it up under the name “super cruiserweight”. But the WBA scrapped the super cruiserweight division earlier in 2026, and the WBC’s bridgerweight division still struggles to attract fighters. Those examples suggest that new divisions only stick around if fighters and promoters actually want to use them.
