Why has it taken 90 years for women’s cricket to reach Lord’s?

Can a T20 World Cup final defeat spark something greater? England’s women will find out when they step onto Lord’s for the first time in Test cricket history. On Friday 11 July 2026 at 11am, they face India—a moment of genuine significance, though shadowed by the memory of losing to Australia by seven wickets in the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup final at Lord’s.

The wait has been extraordinary. Since the inaugural women’s Ashes in 1934, England have played 55 Tests at 19 venues across the country—just never at Lord’s. The Marylebone Cricket Club didn’t admit female spectators to the pavilion until March 1999. England’s women will play their first Test here 142 years after the men played theirs. When the Independent Commission for Equality in Cricket issued its report in June 2023 criticizing the absence of Women’s Test matches at Lord’s, it was a public rebuke that apparently made a difference.

The timing carries its own meaning. This Test arrives exactly 50 years after Rachael Heyhoe Flint led England women’s side out for their first match at Lord’s—a breakthrough that, half a century later, has now made this one possible.

India are no soft touch. Unbeaten in nine Tests on British soil, with two wins and seven draws, they’re formidable opponents. England’s last victory over India in a Test came way back in 1995 in Jamshedpur, by two runs—almost 30 years ago. More recently, India beat England by 347 runs in December 2023, with England scoring 136 and 131. The teams last met at home in 2021, which ended in a draw.

England’s squad blends seasoned players with newcomers. Tammy Beaumont, a 17-year veteran with 612 Test runs—inside England’s top 20 all-time scorers—will lead the batting.
