Shane Van Gisbergen is closing in on NASCAR’s road course record. On June 28, 2026, the New Zealand driver won the Toyota/Save Mart 350 at Sonoma Raceway, moving to within one victory of Jeff Gordon’s nine road course wins—a milestone that seemed distant just a season ago.
Over the past three years, Van Gisbergen has won eight road course races. Five came last season alone. What stands out even more: he’s claimed seven of the last nine road or street course events. At this pace, Gordon’s record stops being a ceiling and becomes just another checkpoint.
Road courses have become a bigger slice of NASCAR’s calendar, and Van Gisbergen’s arrival has coincided with that shift. But bringing in elite drivers from other series has created friction. That boiled over at Naval Base Coronado, where Formula 1 driver Kevin Magnussen made his NASCAR debut with Trackhouse Racing. During the street race, Magnussen and Noah Gragson collided both on track and off.

NASCAR is banking on night racing to draw viewers. Three consecutive night races are coming: Chicago, then Atlanta, then North Wilkesboro, all with green flags after 6 p.m. The big question is whether the format sticks, and whether experiments like Magnussen’s F1 crossover can coexist with the way NASCAR has always done things.
