Reset or refinement? That was the question when Ryan Johnson made his first move as Vancouver Canucks general manager: shipping 25-year-old Nils Höglander to the Nashville Predators and bringing in veteran winger Brendan Gallagher from the Montreal Canadiens.
Höglander’s five-year run in Vancouver ended with the trade. He arrived during the pandemic-shortened 2021 season as a second-round pick from 2019, and by 2023-24, he had scored 24 goals in the Canucks’ division-winning year. Yet consistency eluded him. A healthy scratch during the Stanley Cup playoffs that same season, by 2025-26 he had suited up for just 38 games—the fewest minutes of his career.
Before last season, the 25-year-old signed a three-year, $9 million extension, carrying a $3 million cap hit into 2025-26 with two years left on the deal. In the trade, Vancouver received a 2029 third-round pick from Nashville—originally Colorado’s.
Coaching instability may have held him back. Adam Foote was the fourth head coach Höglander played for in Vancouver, part of a pattern that could have stalled his development. Johnson’s move freed up cap space and a roster opening.
The Canucks turned to veteran experience next. Gallagher, 34, came from Montreal with the Canadiens retaining 50 percent of his salary, cutting his cap hit to $3.25 million for the coming season. Youth and upside out—a proven player in his final years in.
