UEFA Rejects World Cup-Style Hydration Breaks for Euro 2028

Обновлено: 25.06.26 Posted by: Vladimir

“There will be no World Cup-style drinking breaks,” a UEFA spokesperson told the Telegraph. The tournament heads to the United Kingdom and Ireland in 2028, but it won’t adopt the frequent hydration stoppages now common at World Cups.

UEFA already allows hydration breaks under its existing rules. The catch: they only happen when temperatures exceed 32 degrees Celsius—roughly 90 degrees Fahrenheit. That’s the threshold for triggering a break, meaning they’re reserved for genuinely extreme heat rather than treated as standard during every match.

The move shows where UEFA stands on player safety and controlling match flow. The governing body respects the need for hydration when conditions get brutal, but it’s not following the World Cup’s lead in making breaks automatic. Euro 2028 keeps the conditional approach: breaks are there if the heat demands them, not as routine.
