UFC 330: Two-Division Champ Lucas Fernando Makes Philadelphia Debut

August 15 brings championship boxing to Philadelphia. UFC 330 lands at the Wells Fargo Center with two title fights and 12 scheduled bouts total. Among them: Lucas Fernando, 29, a two-division LFA champion making his UFC debut in light heavyweight against Rafael Tobias.

The city hasn’t seen a UFC card since 2019, when Justin Gaethje knocked out Edson Barboza. This return to Philadelphia matters. Islam Makhachev defends his welterweight title against Ian Machado Garry. Mackenzie Dern takes on Gillian Robertson for the strawweight crown.

Fernando’s road to the UFC took the long way. He started 5-0 before a decision loss to Diego Dias at Shooto Brasil 100 in 2020. The Brazilian fought his way back through regional circuits, claiming the LFA middleweight title in 2023 with a fourth-round stoppage at LFA 152. Azamat Bekoev took that belt from him at LFA 173. But Fernando moved up to light heavyweight and won that crown with a 63-second knockout last August, then defended it at LFA 235 in May with a first-round finish. His record: 13-3.

He also appeared on Dana White’s Contender Series against Cesar Almeida. The UFC contract, though, came from his recent dominance on the regional scene rather than that performance. At UFC 330, he meets Rafael Tobias in a light heavyweight bout.

Tobias is 23 and made his UFC debut at UFC 326, where he lost by unanimous decision to Diyar Nurgozhay. Before that loss, he’d won five straight. The Brazilian opened his career 8-0 with six finishes in those first eight fights, then suffered a stoppage loss to Miguel Porto in an LFA bout in 2023. Dana White’s Contender Series brought him to the UFC after he submitted Jair de Oliveira.

Fernando arrives as the seasoned title holder. Tobias comes in hungry, looking to bounce back. Both have something to prove at UFC 330.
