At the Nairobi Club, Kenya’s campaign has revealed a clear strength and weakness. Singles proved brutal in the opening tie against Algeria. Ismael Changawa lost 6-3, 6-4 to Samir Hamza Reguig, and Kael Shah fell 4-6, 6-1, 6-2 to Toufik Sahtali—Kenya lost both singles matches. Then the doubles pair of Zayyan Virani and Liberty Baraka stepped up, defeating Reguig and Sahtali 6-4, 7-5.

Against Botswana, the script flipped. Changawa won straight sets, beating Mark Nawa 6-3, 6-1. Ntumgamili Raguin defeated Shah 7-5, 2-6, 6-2. Doubles clinched it again—Shah and Virani beat Batsomi Marobela and Raguin 6-3, 4-6, 6-3. Final score: Kenya 2-1.

That win kept Kenya’s promotion hopes alive. Shah laid out the urgency: “It’s huge. It keeps us in the battle for promotion. If we lost today, I don’t think we’d still be in contention. We kept our chances alive.” Playing at home made a real difference. Virani felt it during the deciding doubles: “The crowd brought us energy and adrenaline. In the third set, it was all the crowd, to be honest.”
