Kyle Whittingham, 66, has never won a national championship. Now he’s taking over Michigan football\u2014a program that just won the national title for the 2023 season, but Jim Harbaugh left for the NFL to coach it. Can he fix what’s broken?<\/p>\n

The skepticism is immediate and sharp. ESPN’s Paul Finebaum didn’t mince words on The Paul Finebaum Show: “I don’t really take Michigan that seriously in football right now… They’re just not that relevant.” He went further, accusing Michigan of the very trophy it won\u2014claiming the program “cheated and stole a national championship three years ago.”<\/p>\n

That accusation has teeth. Michigan’s football program was caught stealing signs, a scandal that’s haunted the program even as it claimed glory. Sherrone Moore, who succeeded Harbaugh, was fired as Michigan’s head coach, leaving the program in disarray before Whittingham arrived.<\/p>\n

Whittingham’s track record is solid. He coached Utah from 2005 until 2025, compiling a 177-88 record and becoming the all-time leader in wins for Utah’s football program. But he never won a national championship at Utah\u2014a gap that could shadow his Michigan tenure.<\/p>\n

At his introductory press conference on December 28, Whittingham saw it differently. “Michigan is a special place — a legitimate opportunity to win a national championship. It has happened here. So, I looked at it as a final challenge.”<\/p>\n

The betting markets tell a different story. Michigan sits at +250 odds to make the playoff, implying just a 28.6% chance, and +4000 odds to win the national title in 2026. His debut comes September 5 at home against Western Michigan, with Oklahoma visiting in Week 2.<\/p>\n
