Yamal’s Cucurella Warning and Barcelona’s Transfer Ambitions

Barcelona’s Lamine Yamal has issued a playful but pointed warning to Marc Cucurella ahead of El Clásico, as the 18-year-old winger continues to eye reinforcements for his club. Cucurella, who transferred from Chelsea to Real Madrid during the 2026 World Cup, signed a six-year contract worth £47.5 million plus £4 million in add-ons. After four years at Chelsea, the left-back now finds himself in the crosshairs of Barcelona’s rising star.

“I told him he’s going to start the first game and be a substitute in the second because I’m going to eat him alive!” Yamal told Cucurella. Between the clubs, tensions are building. Personal rivalries sharpen alongside tactical preparations.

Yamal’s competitive streak runs deep. During the 2025-26 season, the winger clashed with Real Madrid defender Dani Carvajal on the pitch. The two won Euro 2024 together with Spain, yet have since become opponents. After Real Madrid’s victory, Carvajal gestured to Yamal and reportedly told him: “You speak too much. Speak now.”

Yamal shot back with characteristic bluntness. “No, it’s football. In the end, they celebrated the match and lost at our ground. I haven’t spoken to Carvajal since, and I don’t speak to anyone from Real Madrid,” he stated. The rift reveals the intensifying animosity between the two clubs’ players.

Off the pitch, Yamal is already thinking ahead. He wants to bring Spain team-mate Mikel Oyarzabal to Barcelona. Oyarzabal led Real Sociedad to the Copa del Rey title in the 2025-26 season, scoring 18 goals and providing four assists during the campaign. The forward also scored twice against Saudi Arabia at the World Cup.

On a potential new signing, Yamal was enthusiastic. “He’s a great player; if he comes, we’ll welcome him with open arms. He’d be joining the best club in the world, with the best fans in the world, in what I consider to be the best city in the world. If I were him, I’d do it. We’re waiting for him if he wants to come – go for it,” Yamal said. This comes after Robert Lewandowski’s departure from Barcelona, leaving the club searching for attacking reinforcements.

The contrast is telling. Julian Alvarez moved from Manchester City to Atletico Madrid in summer 2024 but has won no trophies with the Spanish club since. Barcelona, meanwhile, is positioning itself as the destination for elite talent, with Yamal serving as one of its most vocal ambassadors.
